Best Dovetail Saw I've Used Yet
I've handled several western and Japanese dovetail saws, some very nice, some very expensive, but none had the balance of features and performance that this saw does. Now, so much of what makes a particular saw feel right in your hands as well as it's performance is subjective ... so take what I have to say as such;Positives:1. The balance is outstanding.2. Very light for a back saw3. Since the teeth are cut for rip (which most all dovetail cuts will be) it is very quick with little effort to cut dovetails4. Unlike so many other japanese saws, this saw looks like quality. The angles and finishes are superb.5. One of the first Dozukis I've used that you really can let the weight of the saw do all of the work6. It crosscuts extremely well for a rip saw7. The design for blade replacement is among the easiest to use I've tried.8. The price is among the best for a full size Dozuki from a major manufacturer you'll find9. Its cuts will be clean and straight if you let it10. Most of all, it just feels right as soon as you pick it up.Negatives;(none)If you can't tell, I love this saw and sometimes just cut up scrap just to use it.This is one easy product to recommend ...

good for dovetails
I have this saw and the #311. The main difference is that #303 has coarser teeth. Thus, it cuts faster, but is also slightly harder to start smoothly. That said, if you have never used one of these, you'll think the #303 starts very easily. This is an excellent saw for dovetails! If you have aimed it straight, it will cut straight. You can correct to a very, very minor degree, maybe 1/2-1/3 the width of a pencil line, depending upon your pencil!Given the (current) price difference between #303 and #311, I would get the #303.I highly recommend this saw, or the #311. I have a more complete review of the #311, including a picture of some practice cuts, but pretty much everything I said about the #311 is also true for this saw.

It's essentially a super fine rip saw
This is the correct Gyokucho for dovetailing. It's essentially a super fine rip saw. The thin blade makes starting easy, excellent for dovetails. Great price compared to what you would get in the western saw category.
