Worth an extra few bucks
I was on the fence, seeing DACs for near $10, but this won me over.Arrived as advertised, plugged everything in, and flipped to optical, it worked right away. High sound quality, dual output to the 3.5mm jack, and volume control should you need it (ie, if it’s going to speakers out of arm’s reach, turn them up and use the control on this to change volume. Otherwise, just max it out - no distortion or clipping or anything.Got mine for my xbox one x, setup was as simple as going to the audio settings and turning on the optical output, along with HDMI (even though it runs to a PC monitor, hence the need for this, that still seemed necessary to get it going). I’ve searched in vain for the one x’s sampling rate, I don’t think it’s 192 KHz, but at least I know this can handle everything. Mine runs to a mixing board, though you could certainly go directly to powered speakers or a sound system. I believe you can even do Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 through the optical, though I’d imagine if you can’t run the optical straight to a sound system , the analog conversion would reduce it to stereo regardless, so this is really for people without surround. My main deciding factor was that reviews for slightly cheaper DACs had one being replaced every other review.. I wanted it to work the first time. Seems like these tend to. Just be aware, it’s clear from the pics but you only get a micro USB cable to power it, you’ll need your own block or USB strip to power it. So much runs off USB power nowadays , I strongly recommend surge protectors with their own sets of USB outlets, for power-only connections like this, although USB-only strips that extend a PC’s total often include power-only ports as well. You can even power it from the xbox’s USB if you wanted, though that wouldn’t be my first choice.Overall: Well built, good looking, functions well, fair price, would recommend .

Quality product: Works great, audio quality very good. Works with Samsung TV.
Why can’t TV manufacturers simply include a headset jack? Why do we have to buy a special optical cable and then a unit like this to convert the signal and plug the headphones into? Sheesh.I researched all the various DAC units at different price points and went with this one because (a) it didn't have a slew of horrible reviews, and (b) it has a volume control button. (Why can't headphone manufacturers include a volume control on their headphones? Sheesh again.)I purchased a 15’ optical cable so I could bring this unit next to me on the sofa to control the volume, because when plugged into my Samsung TV with settings on “external speaker,” I can no longer control the volume with the TV’s remote.I didn't realize when I ordered this that it had a 3.5mm headset jack. Yay! One less cable conversion.Sturdy and handsomely designed, it’s getting the job done, and the audio quality is great. I recommend this product.

Solved my problems
Bought this device so that I could connect my new 65-inch 2019 LG TV to a decades-old analog sound system. I was considering purchasing a new digital sound system or even a sound bar. But my giant Yamaha speakers (circa 1978) and 25-year-old Harmon Kardon receiver sound a lot better as a system than the newest digital models I sampled at Best Buy and Costco! So this device, which uses RCA cables, seemed like the perfect solution, and I'm happy to report it is working well after several weeks of usage.I first tried a different device that used the TV's HDMI output, but there were issues with loud popping noises. I also did not like that device's annoying LED light, plus it lacked a volume control, and it did not allow the TV's internal sound to play simultaneously with my stereo's sound. After returning it, I bought this Avantree DAC. It uses the TV's Optical output (as recommended by LG tech support) and none of the issues I had with the HDMI device are present. Only issues I have run across is that the Avantree headphone jack makes the sound on my headphones seem distorted. However, not a deal breaker in my case, as I am using the receiver's headphone jack instead and the sound from it is perfect. The other issue is that although I can get sound out of my two main speakers and subwoofer, it will not play on my other surround sound speakers. That's why I like to run the TV's internal sound at the same time to give the overall volume a greater stereo effect and room-filling boost.

Works well, and fixes noise and distortion of my old converter
I prefer older audiophile technology, which is another discussion. Unfortunately, current tends in technology encourages everyone to keep replacing all their equipment when one item is replaced in entertainment system due to newer connections, higher resolution, more channels, and they don't work with old equipment without adapters.Adapters are can have many confounds, including potential noise or distortions.I was using a digital analogue optical converter for a while from Hephsea. This was cheep, worked well for most DVDs and such, but with my newer blue ray, there was very high noise floor of humming during quiet parts of program. I also was getting slight distortion for nearly all youtube streaming that was available on the new device. I was unsure if it was the blueray player itself, coming from the TV it was going through, or the Hephsea optical digital converter.I finally sprang for this converter, and I am extremely pleased. The youtube distortion is completely gone, and the noise floor humming with disks and netflix is approximately 80% better, likely as I can set the volume slightly lower than max on the converter. I believe this VC might reduce the noise, but haven't played with it extensively enough to be able to say that the max volume might be similar to the old cheaper device that didn't have volume control.I am highly satisfied with this device for the price, and it fixed my issues. I felt it was worth the time to write the review. Hope this is helpful.
